DTP structure

This four-year course offers a structured route to PhD study. Set modules in year one are followed by a staged transition into more independent research in subsequent years.

  • Develop your research skills through immersion projects.
  • Write your PhD project proposal in partnership with supervisors and collaborators.

Year 1 training modules are delivered in-person at Lancaster University, between October and December. You will be expected to be on-site in Lancaster up to five days per week.

Year 1 to Year 2

Create a portfolio of evidence and participate in a defence of concept presentation, covering:

  • Your performance to date.

  • Alignment of your project with DTP objectives.

Years 2, 3 and 4

  • Gain confidence and progress with a greater level of independence.
  • Perform research, analysis and write-ups towards a high-quality, original PhD project.
  • Take up a range of opportunities for training and development at both institutions.
  • Utilise additional funding for internships, placements and training in preparation for the next stage of your career.
