Inaugural Lecture – Professor Jo Raven

The world’s health systems have taken a battering in recent years. Wars, migration, climate change, the pandemic and other shocks and stressors have put huge strain on services  and, as we heard, the pressure is likely to grow.

In her inaugural lecture, Professor Joanna Raven guided the audience through her work with health workers, from her early years as a nurse and midwife to her current research on health systems resilience. She set out what resilience really means in practice and what it takes to support the people who keep services running when conditions are at their toughest.

Professor Raven showed how we can strengthen health systems and the health workforce so they can respond to disruption and recover faster, with a clear focus on the poorest and most marginalised communities living in the world’s most complex, overlapping crisis settings.
