About the project

The goal of this project is to improve the availability of quality advanced EmONC at national and sub-national hospitals by strengthening the capacity of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria to deliver an advanced EmONC competency-based curriculum for resident doctors in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Project objectives:

1. To engage with stakeholders in post-graduate medical education in OBGYN to agree and adapt the use of the training package for revision courses and examination OSCE.
2. To identify host institutions in Abuja and Lagos and establish one advanced EmONC Centre of Excellence (CoE) in each site.
3. To establish a sustainable system for operating the CoE for postgraduate OBGYN revision courses in advanced EmONC.
4. To support the NPMCN in providing training to residents and quality assurance of the training at the CoE.
5. To evaluate the programme, provide programme accountability and dissemination.

Our Approach

The programme will engage experts from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (Nigeria Liaison Group) and experienced master trainers in advanced EmONC from Kenya.

LSTM and WBFA team will collabroate with stakeholders at a co-creation workshop to understand the gaps and challenges in nursing education in Abuja Nigeria.

It will be implemented by LSTM in partnership with The Wellbeing Foundation Africa and the grant managers are Ducit Blue Solutions. The beneficiary body is the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN).

The project is a part of the Global Health Workforce Programme (GHWP). Funded by the UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and managed by the Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET), the Global Health Workforce Programme (GHWP) aims to strengthen the health workforce in Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria. The programme has the ambition of achieving more resilient health systems for post-pandemic recovery and supporting progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
