Research themes
Introduction
LSTM leads global research across nine interconnected themes in tropical medicine and global health. Since 1898, we’ve pioneered work on malaria, neglected tropical diseases, antimicrobial resistance, climate health, and health systems strengthening, conducting research where tropical diseases have the greatest impact across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Each theme combines laboratory innovation with field-based evidence, partnering with communities and health systems to develop interventions that save lives and reduce disability. Explore our research areas below to discover how we’re advancing tropical medicine for the world’s most vulnerable populations.

Our research departments
Four specialist departments deliver LSTM’s research themes, combining expertise across clinical sciences, public health, vector biology, and parasitology. Our integrated approach ensures research spans from laboratory discovery to field implementation.
Clinical sciences
Researches the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases, advancing evidence-based approaches that improve care worldwide.
Department of Clinical Sciences
Vector biology
Investigates the insects that transmit diseases such as malaria, dengue and Zika. Develops tools to support the control and elimination of vector-borne diseases across the globe.
Tropical disease biology
Explores the biology of parasites, bacteria and viruses that cause tropical diseases, driving innovation in vaccines, diagnostics and treatments.
Department of Tropical Disease Biology
International public health
Addresses the social, economic and environmental factors that shape health. Strengthens systems and builds capacity in low- and middle-income countries.
