Liverpool Robotic Infection Research Laboratory

This specialist laboratory significantly expands the scale and speed of infectious disease research. Harnessing AI and advanced robotics to accelerate the development of new treatments that could save lives across the world.

Two white robotic arms in a laboratory setting use syringe-like tools to transfer pink liquid between a small vial and a larger bottle on an automated workstation.

The Liverpool Robotic Infection Research Laboratory is the first High Containment Level 3 robotic lab in the UK. It is a world-leading facility designed to automate complex biological processes and accelerate the discovery of treatments for deadly infections.

By integrating AI-powered technology with our scientific expertise, the laboratory can rapidly advance the development of new vaccines, drugs, and diagnostics.

Supported by the Infection Innovation Consortium (iiCON), the facility allows us to conduct high-throughput screening and validation. This means we can test large numbers of potential treatments simultaneously, reducing the time it takes to move life-saving innovations from the lab to the patients who need them.

Our technical capabilities

  • High Containment Level 3 (CL3) suites, providing a safe environment for research.

  • Fully automated liquid handling systems that ensure precision and speed in experimental workflows.

  • Integrated AI and robotics for 24/7 monitoring, data capture, and high-throughput screening.

  • Human organoid platforms that enable us to accurately mimic human tissue responses to infection.
