Strategy, vision and values

Founded in 1898, LSTM was the first institution in the world dedicated to research and teaching in tropical medicine. To this day, we are driven by a clear purpose to improve health and wellbeing for disadvantaged communities across the globe.

Co-created with staff, our 2023-2028 strategy marks a step up in our ambitions and our activities. It builds on a proud legacy and global reputation for excellence in translational research, education and the improvement of healthcare provision.

We have an ambitious vision to be widely recognised as a global organisation, headquartered in Liverpool. We will deliver world-class research and education, with ย equitable partnerships at the heart of all we do. Working together, we will continue to tackle infectious, vector-borne and neglected tropical diseases, while supporting resilient health systems to improve lives worldwide.

Our strategy

Built around the four core themes of research, education, partnerships and investment in our future, our strategy will shape plans and activities over the coming years.

Research

Focus on enhancing our knowledge and understanding of cross-cutting global issues that pose a threat to human health and development.

Respond to existing and emerging global health challenges facing disadvantaged communities.

Education

Develop and nurture the global health leaders of the future who understand the sensitivities of working in resource-constrained environments.

Our graduates will be known as innovators. They will be curious and outstanding professionals who are in demand across health and health-related sectors.

Partnerships

Cultivate and expand partnerships based on a shared vision for sustainable development and health equity. Look for equity in our partnerships, collaborating with those who can support us to realise our ambitions.

Work together to amplify the potential of our research to help communities in need.

Investing in our future

Create an environment and culture where all LSTM staff feel valued and recognised, and evolve our organisational resources and capabilities.

Focus on strategic investment in order to achieve our mission and build a sustainable future for LSTM.
