International Public Health

We bring together staff from diverse professional backgrounds to examine the systems, structures and social factors that influence wellbeing and shape health outcomes globally.

Our work, delivered through a range of research models from individual fellowships and project grants to large, multi-partner consortia, informs policy and supports equitable, sustainable improvements in global health.

• Anaemia, blood transfusion and clinical laboratory systems
• Health systems development – with a specific focus on human resource management and gender equity

The department is home to three specialist research centres:

• Institute for Resilient Health Systems
• Centre for Capacity Research
• Centre for Childbirth, Women’s and Newborn Health

We also host one of LSTM’s global hubs:

• The Centre for Sexual Health HIV and Aids Research (CeSHHAR) in Zimbabwe

Our strategic objectives

• Undertake world-leading multidisciplinary research in sexual reproductive health, maternal health, urban health and well-being, climate change, mental health and disabilities, health systems and health workforce, and capacity research, to improve outcomes for disadvantaged populations.
• Support the delivery of a research-led educational portfolio which will transform global health practice and leadership.
• Sustain existing and develop new strategic and equitable partnerships.
• Invest in internal capabilities (including in our global hubs) to create a pipeline of world class researchers and support staff.

Our researchers also support a vibrant community of students across taught master’s and PhD programmes, with many teaching and supervising students alongside their research.
