Professor Neil Squires

Biography

Professor Neil Squires is the Secretary General of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI). He took up this post on 1st May 2025. having previously been the Director of Global Operations at the UK Health Security Agency.

Neil was Director of Global Health in Public Health England from 2017, a role that transitioned to Director of Global Operations with the creation of the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), a role he occupied until April 2025. He previously worked as the Head of Profession for Health in the Department for International Development working in a regional and country roles in Africa and Asia with DFID prior to that appointment. Neil has spent the majority of his career working internationally, including living and working in Mozambique, Bangladesh, Malawi, and working with the European Commission in Brussels. Neil trained in medicine and then General Practice and completed the Diploma in Tropical Medicine at LSTM, prior to becoming a District Medical Officer in Malawi. He returned from Malawi to complete public health training in the North West, and joined the Department for International Development in 1997. Neil was the International Registrar of the UK Faculty of Public Health, and is an Honorary Professor in Global Health at Lincoln International Institute for Rural Health, University of Lincoln. He has previously been a Board Member of the International NGO the Malaria Consortium.

Neil is a also a member of LSTM’s Audit Committee.
