Biography
Dr Uzochukwu Egere is a Paediatrician and Global Health Researcher with nearly two decades of experience in implementation research in a wide range of public health areas in low- and middle-income countries. He holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of Otago, New Zealand, and a PhD in International Health from Ludwig-Maximilian University, Munch. Uzoh has previously worked as a Consultant Paediatrician in Nigeria and The Gambia and as lead senior Research Clinician at the Medical Research Council The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where he led several research programmes and implementation of child TB contact management within routine national health system. His research interest spans across vaccine trials, health systems strengthening for lung health and TB (with special focus on childhood TB), quality improvement in maternal and newborn health, and health workforce capacity strengthening interventions.
Uzoh is a vocal advocate for equity in research and enthusiastic about eliminating inequalities across the society. As Chair of the Race Equity Action Committee, he leads Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine’s anti-racism initiative and actively participates in other citizenship activities including membership of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee and the BAME network. He is an active mentor in a collaborative mentorship programme for undergraduate students in STEMM disciplines from minority ethnic backgrounds.
Research interests
Uzoh’s research interests focus primarily on low- and middle-income settings and include multidisciplinary approaches to development and implementation of context-specific interventions to improve maternal and newborn health. He is also interested in approaches to improving management of childhood TB with focus on contact tracing and programmatic implementation of TB preventive therapy. He also focuses on innovative approaches to health workforce capacity strengthening; monitoring and evaluation and data management in implementation research.
Teaching
Uzoh contributes to teaching across themes on the Masters in Tropical Paediatrics, Masters in Tropical and Infectious Diseases, and the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene programmes at LSTM. The themes covered include global child health, tuberculosis, childhood infectious diseases and decolonisation in global health teaching. Uzoh supervises PhD students working across health systems strengthening, maternal and child health and clinical tropical medicine themes.
