Integrated Approach in Improving Maternal and Newborn Health Outcomes in Kenya

2023 – present

About the project

The Integrated Approach in Improving Maternal and Newborn Health Outcomes programme is funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The programme is funded under UNFPA Kenya’s 10th country programme that supports the Government of Kenya to achieve three people-centred transformative results by 2030.

The Integrated Approach in Improving Maternal and Newborn Health Outcomes programme will contribute directly to one of the three transformative results: ending preventable maternal deaths. The programme will contribute to this through implementing sustainable and scalable evidence-based interventions.

Our strategies and approaches

The interventions are designed to contribute to the achievement of substantial improvements in maternal and newborn health (MNH) outcomes. The programme will be implemented in three phases to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Improve the implementation and accountability linked to facility based Maternal and Perinatal Death Reviews and Response (MPDSR)
  2. Scale midwifery educator continuing professional development (CPD) programme focusing on the target counties
  3. Implement specific recommendations from previous Kenya Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths (CEMD) reports
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of CEMD recommendations to date and develop a mechanism to sustain the CEMD in Kenya.

The Integrated Approach in Improving Maternal and Newborn Health Outcomes programme is being implemented in four UNFPA focal counties of Kenya: Kwale, Nairobi, Bungoma, and Garissa.
