Decolonising Global Health Research
Founded in 1898 to serve colonial interests, LSTM today is committed to confronting our history and transforming how global health research is conducted. We are working to become an anti-racist organisation that prioritises equity, justice, and genuine partnership with communities worldwide.
This work is ongoing and challenging, but essential for creating a more just future in global health research.
All across LSTM are expected to reflect on equity within research partnerships and actively work to address power imbalances in the broader global health research ecosystem.
We support our staff and students to do this via:
- Training in racial literacy, including LSTMโs history and heritage
- Embedding our principles of equitable partnership
- Endorsing the use of reflexivity statements to avoid โparachute researchโ and demonstrate how equity has been promoted throughout the research lifecycle
- Support and expertise from our Centre for Capacity Research to guide staff to embed effective capacity strengthening throughout our activities
