DTP funding and eligibility

Academic requirements 

You must have (or be expected to get) a first class or upper second class UK honours degree (or international equivalent). A master’s degree is preferable but not required.

We encourage DTP applications from a wide range of academic disciplines, including:

  • Medicinal chemistry
  • Molecular and vector biology
  • Parasitology
  • Entomology
  • Pharmacology
  • Clinical specialties
  • Epidemiology
  • Statistics
  • Health informatics
  • Mathematics
  • Economics
  • Social and management science

Residence eligibility

We welcome applicants of all nationalities, although places are limited for international students with ‘overseas’ fee paying status. Find out your fee status on the UKCISA website. 

One place each year is reserved for a student from a Low- or Middle-Income Country.

Funding 

There’s a generous funding package available to DTP students, to enable you to make the most of development opportunities and live comfortably in Liverpool. 

  • Full payment of ‘home’ tuition fees. 
  • Additional funding to cover the difference between ‘home’ and ‘overseas’ fees for international students. 
  • An annual tax-free stipend for living costs at the UKRI national doctoral rate (£20,780 for 2025-26).
  • A research training support grant of £5,000 per year to support your training and research.
  • The opportunity to apply to our ‘Flexible Funding Supplement’ for extra funding towards your training and development.
  • No funding is available to for visas or travel.
